Music Nova Scotia – Mentorship

The Mentorship Component supports up to a 75% level of Investment to a $15,000 maximum per applicant per deadline for developmental employment relationships between developing and export-ready artists/companies/entrepreneurs (Mentee) and mentors in which a more experienced music industry professional (Mentor) shares information, skills or knowledge and standards or best practices that will advance the applicant’s career, enhance their education and build their networks. The applicant (Mentee) should receive the primary benefit of the mentorship. Eligible applicants include Developing and Export Ready Artists/Companies/Entrepreneurs. It is mandatory that all applicants to the Mentorship stream contact the Program Manager in advance to discuss their mentorship project to ensure you and your proposed activity are eligible.

Music Nova Scotia – Export – Trade Missions and Opportunities

The objective of the Music Nova Scotia is to encourage the creation, development and growth of small Nova Scotian music businesses around artists and their intellectual property. To aid in this mission, Music Nova Scotia actively promotes trade missions and other opportunities where Nova Scotia artists can be selected to play in front of domestic and international audiences.

Protecting your Intellectual Property in Export Markets

Consider taking steps to protect your intellectual property before you export abroad. Although Canada has ratified several treaties dealing with IP, you are still required to officially register your IP in a foreign country before your property is protected there. Copyrights are an exception to this rule. When you register for copyright protection in Canada, your protection is valid in any country that has signed the Berne Copyright Convention or other copyright treaties.

SOCAN – Licensing Program

A SOCAN license gives businesses the freedom and flexibility to use virtually any music they want in their business or at their public event – legally, ethically, and easily. SOCAN makes this process simple by allowing music users to pay a relatively small fee, often once a year, which is distributed to music creators in Canada and around the world through our reciprocal agreements with similar societies. The fees are distributed to our Members who are composers, authors, and publishers of music, according to distribution rules approved by our Board of Directors. By law, permission to publicly perform music in business is not automatically granted when you purchase CDs, mp3s, subscribe to online music services, stream music, etc. – doing this only allows you to use the music for private (non-commercial) purposes. Similarly, when you hire musicians to play music in your establishment or at a public event, the fees paid to them are for their performance, not to compensate the authors and publishers of the songs they perform.

The Canada-European Union (EU) Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) is a progressive trade agreement that upholds and promotes the values that Canada shares with the EU. This landmark agreement was signed on October 30, 2016 and entered into force on September 21, 2017.

The Centre of Administration for Permissions

Permissions issued by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) help to keep Canada’s domestic food supply safe, protect the environment from invasive animal and plant diseases and plant pests, and ensure compliance with various regulatory requirements, enabling market access and trade. The Centre of Administration (CoA) receives and processes applications for domestic and import related permissions, which include licences, permits, ministerial exemptions, and permissions to move. The Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP)

The Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) is a free trade agreement between Canada and 10 other countries in the Asia-Pacific region: Australia, Brunei, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam. Once fully implemented, the 11 countries will form a trading bloc representing 495 million consumers and 13.5% of global GDP, providing Canada with preferential access to key markets in Asia and Latin America. On December 30, 2018 the CPTPP entered into force among the first six countries to ratify the agreement – Canada, Australia, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, and Singapore. On January 14, 2019, the CPTPP entered into force for Vietnam.
