Fisheries and Oceans Canada- Atlantic Fisheries Fund

The Atlantic Fisheries Fund is intended to help Canada’s fish and seafood sector to transition to meet the growing demand for seafood globally. Its aim is to bring high value, high quality and sustainable products to markets at home and around the world. The Atlantic component of the fund applies to Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. It supports: innovation to encourage new products and technologies infrastructure to encourage capital investments in new products, processes or technologies science partnerships between industry, academia, and other research institutions to improve our knowledge Applications will be accepted until all available funding for the fiscal year has been allocated to projects. Funding will become available again in the next fiscal year.

Innovation Mobilization Program

Industry can collaborate with Springboard network members in order to access funding (applications for the IM Program must be submitted by a Springboard Atlantic member to qualify for funding). Funding categories include:

Industry Engagement:connects skilled professionals in academia with like-minded contacts in industry to drive new collaborations and support research commercialization in Atlantic Canada.
Proof of Concept:support for developing early stage ideas, from a lab bench to a working prototype or equivalent (e.g. software beta).
Patent and Legal:support for the assessment and protection of ideas with commercial potential. All forms of intellectual property are eligible e.g. patents, industry designs, copyright, trademarking etc.
Marketing Support:validate the commercial potential of an idea. This funding supports market assessment and prototype development.

Invest Nova Scotia is thrilled to announce five Invest Nova Scotia Accelerate streams, each offering cash and expertise to Nova Scotia start-ups hitting milestones on the path to investment-readiness.

Learnsphere – E-tools for Exporting

LearnSphere’s E-tools for Exporting (E for E) provides financial assistance to help you develop and integrate electronic tools that can help you do business more effectively and get your products and services to international markets more efficiently. If you’ve been working on a recent marketing or business strategy that includes updating or improving your potential to export outside of Canada, you may be eligible for financial assistance. This program can help to hire a consultant or agency for activities such as:

Website development, re-design or rebranding
Responsive web design conversion (ensuring mobile-friendly design)
Integration of e-commerce functionality
Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
Paid advertising (PayPerClick, Google Adwords, etc.)
Social media strategy or integration
Videos, online catalogues and other online customized tools
Translation of website
Creation/design of language toggle
Training on any of the above

National Research Council Canada – Youth Employment Programs

You could receive a financial contribution towards the salary of a post-secondary graduate to help you research, develop and commercialize new technologies, or to hire a youth to work on a green project. To be eligible, your business needs to:   Be incorporated and for-profit Share a portion of the salary costs Have 500 or fewer full-time employees Be ready to enhance its innovation capacity   The duration of the internship must be between 6 and 12 months for graduates and between 3 to 6 months for Youth-Green candidates. Candidates must be between the ages of 15 and 30.

NRC – Research and Development Programming

Learn about how the National Research Council can support your innovation efforts with strategic and collaborative research centres, scientific and technical advisory services, and licensing opportunities. Programs include: Research and collaboration – Research and collaboration centres, international innovation, libraries and data collections, industrial R&D groups Facilities – Unique and specialized research and testing facilities to support private and public sector partners Products and services – Technical and advisory services, software and applications, reference materials, calibration, construction codes Intellectual property licensing – Patent licensing opportunities to develop integrated and market-ready solutions  

Perennia Product Development/Innovation Centre

The Perennia Innovation Centre is food and food-based product development, improvement and small pilot processing facility in Bible Hill, Nova Scotia. The Centre is a 25,000 sq. ft. green facility following Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) principles. It has a provincially-inspected pilot plant, and food product development laboratory and analytical and microbiological labs and start up lease space for business incubation. Perennia food scientists and research associates work with established and new agrifood, beverage and seafood businesses to create new products, or improve current products or processes.

Small Farm Acceleration Program 2019-2020

The Small Farm Acceleration Program is to support small farms in Nova Scotia through business planning and strategic growth.

Strawberry Aphid Monitoring

Perennia provides aphid monitoring and virus testing in the strawberry sector province-wide in collaboration with the Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture and Horticulture Nova Scotia. This has been undertaken since 2013 in the wake of 2012’s significant crop losses due to viruses carried by aphids.
